OBITUARY

Marlene Eleanor Lassman nee Kobernik, age 82.

Beloved wife of Daniel Lassman. Loving mother of Carie (Tony Malcoun) Lassman, Matthew (Megan) Lassman, and Rebecca (Carter Roeber) Lassman. Most magnificent Mamie of Lucy and Harry Malcoun, Penelope, Ruby and Olive Lassman, Oscar and Trudy Roeber, and the late Eddie Malcoun. Devoted sister of the late Francine (Paul Pershin) Rovell and Howard Kobernik. Marlene was a true force of nature, endlessly generous and loving to all who met her. She was charming, hysterical, and lived life on her own terms. Marlene sang opera and was the only white woman in a gospel choir in Evanston. She earned a master’s in early childhood development (Erikson Institute ’94) and volunteered to work with at-risk mothers in crisis. She maintained life-long relationships with the women and children she mentored. She was by their side as they grew for decades. While hired as an employee, Marlene refused to be paid, and donated her salary back to the women and children she mentored. She was a tutor at 826CHI where she taught reading and writing to children. She became their instant grandmother, and them, her instant grandchildren. Marlene fiercely loved her family, her friends, her dogs, her many guinea pigs, and last but certainly not least, candy. She was an intellectual who devoured literature and a gourmet cook. She loved nature - but only from the indoors. Marlene was magnificent, unlike anyone else. Her infinite empathy, insight, and warmth, will live on in the hearts of everyone and everything she touched. She was magic. Interment Private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Save the Children 501 Kings Highway East, Suite 400, Fairfield, CT 06825 www.savethechildren.org and Doctors Without Borders www.doctorswithoutborders.org. Mar is and shall forever be one of my life’s richest and most magnificent blessings. We met 53 years ago on the WPSN board, and became very close friends shortly thereafter. For decades, we have shared the utter joy - and utter sorrows of life. We have laughed til we cried, hour after hour after hour. In person. On the phone. On trips. Mar’s family is perfectly exquisite. Every single cherished one. Oh! Such a spectacular family! As is she from whom they came. Impossible to imagine this world without Mar. Cannot begin to describe the full measure of my sympathy. I love you all completely.

I would like to share a heartfelt memory in honor of a very special friend, Marlene Lassman nee Kobernik. My heart is heavy with sadness at her passing. She was an extraordinary individual—loving, genuine, spontaneous, and incredibly kind. Her presence was a beacon of light, radiating warmth and compassion to all who knew her.

Her selflessness knew no bounds, always putting others before herself with a smile that could brighten even the darkest of days. I had the privilege of meeting her in Illinois - November 2007 where our time together and her family was filled with cherished moments that I will forever hold close to my heart.
Since the first time I met her, she embraced me with open arms, making me feel like a member of her own family. Her kindness and nurturing spirit knew no bounds, and her caring nature touched the lives of everyone she encountered.
Though I may not have seen her in some time, her impact on my life remains immeasurable. She will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will forever cherish the memories we shared. Her soul was pure, her authenticity unmatched. I am in awe of her unwavering kindness and boundless love.

Dear Marlene, you will be deeply missed. Your memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know you. May you rest in peace, knowing the profound impact you had on the lives of those around you.
