Marty and I shared a double bond. The family bond and the radio bond. Before I could finish the sentence.."who sang Sweatheart"...he'd cut me off and say.."Franke and the Knockouts, 1980" No one and I mean no one knew radio like this guy. My dad said he walked around with a transistor radio from age 10 on. The word..."legend" comes to mind. I will miss my "cuz" as he called me..he was a witty, unique guy. As we say in radio.."a shout out to Martin Zivin"

I worked in radio with Marty in the 1990s. Everything about that job was difficult, but Marty came in every day with humor, poise and grace. Marty "adopted" me into his family and provided comfort and encouragement when things seemed darkest. That was no surprise to anyone who knew Marty; what surprised me was the sheer number of others Marty "adopted". Simply put, Marty was a mensch; he came by it honestly, his parents were wonderful, Karen helped Marty become an even better man and now his children carry on that legacy. My life, and the lives of so many others are greatly improved for having known Marty.

Marty was a co-worker of mine at WXRT in the mid 70's. We fell out of touch, for too many years. We reconnected a couple years back.

Marty is the brother I never had- His loss to me and those who knew him can't be told in words.

Marty and I never worked together. But we became friends. What made Marty a most impressive human being was his kindness and generosity. He was always the first to offer help if needed. For quite some time we had planned to get together for lunch. This past year we finally got together to share our experiences tell each other stories about our love for radio. I will miss that. May Marty live in God's Eternal Memory.

I first met Marty via facebook several years ago...he often commented on my statuses and sometimes we'd message each other. Being Marty, he knew much about my radio history in Chicago and the suburbs, and when we finally met in person at the first "Marty Party" is kind of felt like we were longtime friends. His wife Karen was fantastic and the entire group (family, friends) at those Marty Party's were great which spoke volumes about the kind of person Marty was. He clearly had a heart of gold. Wish I had become friends with him sooner but I cherish the short time I did know him personally. My heart goes out to all who loved him (so many!), surely a big loss. Deepest sympathy and condolences.

It was all too short of a time to get to know the wonderful person I would be privileged to care for---Marty. I am very grateful for the time I did have to come to know him. I know he is no longer suffering or in pain. He is at peace in the loving shelter of God. May God bring a healing balm of peace to his family and friends...

Marty was generous; with his time, with his money, with his advice, with his friendship. I don't think I've ever met such a generous man. He was the first to make a donation to Relay for Life, even before cancer touched his house so cruelly. He was available 24/7 with a kind word and good counsel when I lost a job and needed his ear to the ground. I could bring him a stack of unedited airchecks and he'd turn them into an audition tape that got me offers. He hosted many radio breakfasts, and beyond, he folded Clay and me into his Niles West crew as well.
I will never think about Jack's Restaurant without remembering our last brunch there before it closed.
If there's a merciful God, Marty is now with his Karen, who took care of him up until the day she left this earth.
Shauna and Evan, your parents were both so proud of you. You both embody the best of them. May memories bring you comfort always.
