OBITUARY

Lorraine Martin Winters, 92, resident of Highland Park for 60 years, died peacefully at home on November 18, 2015. Born June 5, 1923 in Minneapolis, MN, she was the loving wife of Sidney A. Winters and the devoted daughter of the late Minnie and Arthur Martin. Lorr attended the University of MN. She left college to take a position as secretary to the Base Commander at Geiger Field, WA during WWII where she met her husband. Survivors also include loving and beloved children: Lois Winters Rowe (Grant), Ellen Winters Miller (Bruce), Gregg Winters, Rich Winters (Jane); devoted grandchildren: Patrick Rowe (Rachel), Julia Rowe Taylor (Rich), Stephen Rowe, Ken, Jesse, Montgomery and Daniel Miller, Michael, Laura and Beth Winters; great grandchildren: Jacob and Lillian Taylor and Amelia Rowe and 7 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Sylvia Greene of Minneapolis, MN. Lorr is also survived by her 101 year old sister Cerna Gendler of Minneapolis MN. The 3 sisters were extraordinarily close and their respective children viewed them as interchangeable loving mothers. Lorraine was a true humanitarian who helped her community and modeled these important values for her children. She brought kindness and compassion to everyone she met. She believed in giving back to her community and contributed her time and talents in leadership roles to the following organizations: Ravinia Precinct Judge for National and Local Elections for many years, Highland Park Hospital Volunteer for 36 years, Publicity Director for National Heart Wish for 2 years, Board Member of Highland Park Hospital Auxiliary for 10 years, Golden Giver for 50 years to the Jewish United Fund, Founding Member of Congregation Solel, Charter Member of Ravinia Green Country Club, Life Member of Women’s American ORT, Life Member of Auxiliary of Highland Park Hospital, Life Member of Brandeis University National Woman, PTA Boards for Ravinia and Edgewood Schools. Hobbies included knitting, needlepoint, bridge, mah jong, canasta, book clubs, golf, going to Chicago Blackhawks games and chauffeuring around 4 children. Lorraine will be missed by all of her extended family. Funeral services will commence on Friday, Nov. 20, 2015 at 11:30 AM. at Congregation Solel, 1301 Clavey Road, Highland Park Il. Interment will follow in Westlawn Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Chicago Jewish Funerals-Skokie, 847.229.8822, www.cjfinfo.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to ORT or the Ovarian Cancer Orange County Alliance. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Denise Anderson for her weekend coverage during the past year and most especially their everlasting gratitude to Evelyn Darko for her devotion, compassion and the extraordinary and loving care Lorraine received over the past 7 years.

So sorry to hear this, Lois and family. It was a blessing that you had her in your life for so many precious years. Now you must continue to live your lives in ways that would make her proud and savor your memories of happy days, as I sure she would wish you to.

I will remember visiting Lorraine when she and Sid would visit Lois & Grant in Niskayuna. My memories of her are painted with warmth and love for her family also extended to me and mines. Rest in peace Mrs. Winters and heartfelt hugs are extended to Sid, Lois, Ellen & the entire family.
